Recorded on September 15, 1957 at the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey. Tracks 6 & 7 are previously unissued bonus tracks. Multimedia CD-ROM content includes interviews with trombonist Curtis Fuller and engineer Rudy Van Gelder, a brief video of Coltrane's solo in "So What" performed by the Miles Davis Quintet in 1959, and assorted text-based content (essays, recollections, photos etc).

All the tunes on Blue Train are smooth as silk, with Coltrane's exquisite playing there to guide you along the way. All of the back-up musicians Coltrane had with him did a magnificent job as well. Kenny Drew on piano is an excellent example of this, along with Lee Morgan on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums.
